You, M.D. provides medical, scientific, and strategic support to attorneys representing clients harmed by exposure to toxins, pollution, or other contamination from chemicals such as PFAS, arsenic, lead, chromium, particulates, fluorine, cadmium and radioactivity. As physicians, You, M.D. interfaces with other health and scientific professionals to marshal the latest medical and scientific information on the injuries and health effects caused by toxic chemicals and other pollution.
Of particular interest to us are the health effects of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). We work with regional and national environmental law firms, local water authorities, and individual clients to help them understand the health effects of PFAS at various levels of exposure, to interpret and apply EPA guidelines, to make recommendations as to water consumption safety, and to provide accurate information about the health effects of these chemicals.
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances:
Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) such as PFOA and PFOS have been used for over 60 years in the production of teflon, water-resistant clothing, fire-fighting foams, and stain-resistant coatings such as Scotchguard. Dupont, 3M, and other companies have produced millions of tons of these chemicals. Perfluoroalkyl substances do not biodegrade in the environment, or in our bodies, and so have accumulated throughout all areas of the planet and in us. Because of this they are known as the "forever chemicals". Research shows that these chemicals have health effects even at very low concentrations, including immune system suppression, thyroid disease, testicular and kidney cancer, hypercholesterolemia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and infertility.
Dupont has settled multiple lawsuits for hundreds of millions due to its contamination of public water supplies around its factory in Parkersburg, WVa. One settlement funded multiple epidemiological studies of the long-term health effects of exposure to PFAS, while another settlement compensated those with health conditions caused by those exposures.
The Environmental Working Group has published a map showing the public and private water systems in 49 states that have been contaminated by PFAS, with more contaminated systems being identified each year. People in these areas have been drinking more than the maximum safe level of PFAS as determined by the EPA, according to its latest Health Advisory for PFOA and PFOS, and according to safe limits set by states such as Vermont, California, and Minnesota.

Specific services have included:
1. Medical strategist for legal cases involving environmental toxins and health. Current cases include the Bennington, VT PFOA contamination (class certification and medical monitoring remedy) and cases arising from the Kingston coal ash spill and clean up, where hundreds of workers were chronically injured from exposure to coal ash (supporting medical damages evidence).
2. Advise local and regional water authorities as to the safety of their contaminated water, whatever the contaminant may be. Recent cases include the PFAS contamination of the West Morgan – East Lawrence water supply in Alabama, a case that the local water authority settled through 3M paying $35 million for a new reverse-osmosis treatment system.
3. Identify and interface with expert witnesses.
4. Construct clinically-sound medical monitoring programs for cohorts exposed to environmental toxins, including PFOA, PFAS, arsenic and other contaminants.
5. Interpret and apply EPA guidelines and Health Advisories on long-term exposure to chemicals such as PFAS, lead, Arsenic, Manganese and Fluoride.
6. Inform physicians on the health implications of PFAS and other environmental toxins, so they can provide meaningful follow-up for exposed patients who are represented by attorneys.
7. Research and identify scientific data and studies that support health-related damages and arguments.
8. Develop health questionnaires to screen people who have been exposed to toxic chemicals and
arrange and interpret PFAS blood testing for PFAS-exposed clients.
9. Draft science-based health allegations and arguments in complaints and other pleadings.
